Out Friday 10th March
The first track from his forthcoming album – out later in 2023!
He’s back! Mundy is delighted to announce the release of his new single ‘Underneath Vesuvius’ this Friday 10th March. He is also putting the finishing touches to a brand-new album, due for release later this year.
A cinematic love song about Mundy and his wife’s first holiday set in the romantic town of Sorrento in Italy, ‘Underneath Vesuvius’ is the first track from the album and showcases Mundy’s image-building with words and his knack for melody. Injected with Mundy’s familiar trademark sense of humour around the realities of life, he sings about not talking on the bus after a couple’s tiff… before becoming absorbed again in the bubble of young love and making love “underneath Vesuvius”.
The track unfolds like a short movie and features a sample of the great Enrico Caruso on the intro and at the end of the song – a stylish touch that really sets the scene. Mundy revisited Sorrento with Soda Blonde guitarist and video director Adam O’Regan to create a video that will make you want to hop on a plane and sip an Aperol Spritz! Adam casually followed a lost Mundy as he wandered around the city, hoping to capture a beautiful memory… and the end result certainly shows that unmistakable nostalgic magic and essence of Sorrento as a dreamy destination for young lovers. The video will premiere on YouTube with the release of the single.
Mundy’s illustrious music career now spans four decades and the Offaly man shows no signs of slowing down. As a young, broken-hearted busker Mundy penned some of his greatest hits including, ‘Gin & Tonic Sky’ and ‘To You I Bestow’. These stirring tracks quickly secured Mundy a place on the roster of Sony’s Epic Records as well as a publishing deal with Warner Chappell Music. Mundy’s first album Jelly Legs was released in October 1996 to critical acclaim and went on to sell over 50,000 copies.
However, it was his visceral debut single ‘To You I Bestow’ that garnered the most attention after it was licensed to appear on the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet. This bestselling soundtrack went on to sell 11 million copies and introduced Mundy to the world. Mundy has since gone on to release a further nine albums creating his own flavour of acoustic, folk-based pop/rock through his own record label ‘Camcor Recording’ which he set up in 2000.
His album Raining Down Arrows went straight into the Irish Charts at #1, he has enjoyed gold and multi-platinum record sales and has picked up a number of awards including the Meteor Music award for ‘Best Male’ and ‘Most Downloaded Song’ two years running for his rousing rendition of ‘Galway Girl’ featuring Traditional Irish musician Sharon Shannon.
Mundy’s music has allowed him to travel the world supporting some of the greats; Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris, Don McClean, R.E.M, Oasis, The White Stripes, and The Pogues to name a few. In 2014, Mundy was invited to perform for perhaps his most prestigious audience to date, in the White House for president Barrack Obama as part of their St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. He also had a great chat with the Vice President that same day not knowing who he was. It was Joe Biden! Mundy also played for Mr Biden on his visit to Dublin as VPOTUS in 2016.
Mundy has toured all over Ireland, the UK, Europe, Australia, Asia and North America. He loves touring the USA as most of the artists that inspire him are from North America. He is currently finishing a brand-new album with his friend Gavin Glass at Orphan Recording Studios and various other locations.
